We tell you how, in a couple of simple steps, you can remove the suggestions from the start menu in Windows 10.
Windows is no longer what it was, and I don’t mean its quality. I mean that for Microsoft it is no longer enough that we buy its operating system, in fact it takes a year to offer it for free.
Microsoft is a company that is now focused on services, and as such is not much different from Google or Apple. It is important to remember this, because it is what really influences the decisions of the company, from the very launch of the operating system.
Suggestions, covert advertising on our desktop
With all that what I want to tell you is that from now on you will see things like the suggestions in the start menu more often. This functionality was one of the novelties of the first major update to the system at the end of last year, and is responsible for showing applications that might interest us in the start menu.
In fact, until now the start menu only saved what we already had installed on the system, a place from which to access everything we need, but also now we can find icons that take us to the Windows Store to download or buy programs.
If at least these suggestions had something to do with the programs you use, it wouldn’t be so bad, but Microsoft still has a lot to learn from Google and other companies specialized in learning from their users. The result is that from time to time we will find links to the casual fashion game or an app of dubious utility.
How to remove the suggestions from the start menu
Fortunately, Microsoft left the ability to disable this feature, and we’ll tell you how to do it.
The easiest way is to simply open System Settings. It’s in the Start Menu -> Settings. Once there, we open the Personalization screen.
The option that we have to deactivate here is the Show suggestions occasionally at startup. Once deactivated, we will never see the suggestions again (until Microsoft comes up with another way to show them to us, of course).
While you’re here, it may be a good idea to turn off suggestions on the lock screen, as we show you in this article.
How to remove all suggestions from Windows 10
It’s easy, right? However, as indicated in How to Geek, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Actually the option we just deactivated does not remove all suggestions, since we will continue seeing them in the icons of the start menu, in addition to notifications from time to time. Personally, there is a Get Office 365 notification that I’ve already disabled three times and keep coming out, which is very annoying.
So we will have to change the registry or group policies to get rid of these suggestions once and for all, or as their creators call them, Microsoft Consumer Experience.
In Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise we can choose to create a group policy instead of messing with the registry and risking messing up the system.
We open the policy editor by opening the start menu and typing gpedit.msc.
Here we look for the following configuration: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Cloud content.
On the right side we will see the configuration Do not show Windows suggestions. We just have to double click on it and choose Enabled. We rebooted, and the suggestions are over.
In Windows 10 Home, we don’t have the group policy editor, so we have no choice but to touch the registry. We open the start menu and type regedit to open the registry editor.
We look for the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Policies -> Microsoft -> Windows. Once there, we create a new key by right-clicking on the Windows folder, New -> Key.
The name of the key will be Cloud Content. We right click on it and in New -> DWORD Value (32 bits). The new value will be called DisableWindowsConsumerFeatures; We double click on it to change the value to 1. After restarting the computer, we will not see the suggestions again in any way.
