Disney conducts a study of deepfakes to enhance their use in film and television

Although deepfakes have been criticized by detractors, such as Facebook and Twitter, who have implemented measures to eradicate them from their platforms, others such as Disney have been seeing them as a very useful tool to be used and implemented in their productions. .

In this sense, the most famous animated mouse company in the world carried out a study within its Disney Research laboratories in which they obtained notable advances that will set the course for the future, where deepfakes are widely adopted by the world. world of entertainment for the development of commercial projects and television series.

In addition to Disney Research, the study also involved members of the Federal Polytechnic School of Zrich (ETH Zrich). Both teams managed to increase the resolution of the results of a deepfake by taking it to one megapixel, making the image obtained look sharper and more detailed.

However, although the result is not yet something worth using in a film, the researchers are optimistic that this is considered an important step towards achieving that goal, pointing to the use of an image source from the film as a determining element. face that is of high quality and resolution.

Expensive experience

In the past, Disney in conjunction with Lucasfilm had resorted to the use of deepfakes in the movies of the universe. Star Wars, Rogue One and The Rise of the Skywalker to feature actress Carrie Fisher playing a young version of Princess Leia, as well as actor Peter Cushing.

It should be noted that the performance of all this procedure had a high cost, this being the reason why Disney intends, through this study, to optimize deepfakes in order to make this a more profitable technique in terms of speed and economy. .

So far, the deepfakes achieved have had a very low resolution, which has meant that, although they may present a good quality when viewed on the screen of a smartphone or a Tablet, as it is a large-scale commercial project, the effect cannot be replicated.

And it is that the intention of the researchers is not only to implement improvements in aspects such as sharpness, fluidity and stabilization of the faces when overlapping with the original, but also to make their resolution suitable enough to be used in the movie theater.

According to the study, the efforts of the researchers have made it possible for the images to have 4 times higher resolution. However, the team will not rest in continuing to improve this aspect until it reaches the point where it is difficult for the viewer to distinguish between a false face and a real one.
