The original prototype of the iPhone was very different from the current one; So much so that the philosophy behind the design is completely opposite.
The iPhone is an icon of the 21st century, it represented a change in the technology industry like few others before; But the story could have been different, if Apple had chosen the first option.
Once Apple knew that it wanted to get into the mobile sector, the question was how to do it; two internal projects explored different solutions. One of them, the P1, led by Tony Fadell, the mind behind the popular iPod; the other, P2, led by Scott Forsall, who had accompanied Steve Jobs when he was expelled from his own company.
Two ways of understanding the smartphone
P1 and P2 are two different ways of understanding the modern smartphone; Keep in mind that at that time the smartphone concept did not exist for the general public, so they had a huge canvas to paint.
After some leaks, we can finally see this prototype of the original iPhone compared to the one that would be the winner of the contest. Created in plastic and without the luxuries of the final version, they are the proof of concept of what the iPhone would be.
Spoiler alert: in the end P2 won. Its interface was based on clicking icons, taking advantage of the touch screen that occupied almost the entire device; It was, and is, an approach based on giving prominence to apps.
For its part, P1 presented the idea with more sense: simply offer the same as the iPod, but better; It was the enormous success of the iPod that allowed Apple to consider a mobile, so it was logical that the device offered a similar experience.
The original prototype of the iPhone was very different from the final result
As you can see, P2 was quite slower than P1, but that is because it was a more ambitious system; P1 was basically an iPod on steroids. Its interface was based on a wheel that the user used to navigate through menus and programs; In perspective, it is a horrible and very little intuitive interface.
But we can only say that because we have already got used to the alternative; I don’t even want to imagine the doubts that went through the minds of those responsible for Apple they had to choose between both projects.
Don’t be surprised by the drawing of the acorn instead of the apple; It is not that the Spanish of Zetta were the creators of the iPhone, it is that iOS was originally called Acorn OS.
Although today P1 and P2 would not attract attention, they are two historical pieces, which represent the sector’s most important choice in decades.
